Questioning an entrenched habit is difficult at best. In the investment world, rational and reasoned arguments exist for using certain types of indicators to gauge the health of the “stock market” or the economy in general.
But not all indicators are alike. Sometimes, convincing yourself of the differences between, and the built-in flaws of, un-examined, well-known indicators can be pictured in the form of a… picture!
This is my first stab at it: an image that frames our devotion to and our fixation with an almost meaningless indicator, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA).
